So Ryan and I were at one of my favorite stores, IKEA, last week and I came across some beautiful burlap covered storage boxes and I wanted them! But a certain someone was getting concerned about how much money we were already spending there so I decided to not purchase them (maybe I would go back on a secret trip and just get them alone hehe) but my unwillingness to spend money on something I felt I could make kicked in and I went one a mission to do so. I took a trip to Christmas Tree Shops knowing exactly what I was looking for. They, for as long as I can remember, have sold cardboard photo boxes. Now the problem was they are too short for DVDs, which is what I wanted them for (We have a TV entertainment unit in the living room which has two shelves with glass doors, which I keep the DVDs behind - in alphabetical order lol - but lately i just can't stand looking through those class doors and seeing DVD cases, if only there were some cute boxes I could conceal them in, which brings me to this whole project) but the lid seemed deep enough to still cover the DVDs, so I bought one box for $2.99 and gave it a try...
I started with the box (they had some patterned ones but I chose the lightest colored one so it would show the color the least through the fabric) and the burlap (which you can find at fabric stores by the yard, I bought mine at JoAnn Fabrics). I began with the top of the box top and began to hot glue gun the burlap to the top of the box top, starting at one end and slowly hot gluing it bit by bit, pulling the burlap light as i went to prevent any wrinkling of the fabric.
Next I just started to glue the fabric like I was wrapping a present, the first part I glued were the two longest sides of the box top and then started gluing the short ends like I would tape a present, remember to cut any excess fabric to prevent the overlapping of fabric getting too thick...beware you will burn your fingers with the glue, but I know you ladies and few men are tough enough to handle a little pain...
Below is what the top looks like when finished, now its by no means perfect and the next one I will try to make look a little more neat, but its the inside and no one is going to see it anyway....now onto the box itself...
The first step was to take off the metal bracket...and what I mean by take off is to rip off lol
Next was to just follow the same steps as I did with the Top...
After I was done gluing the fabric I glued the metal bracket back on but on the long side instead of the short...and then I was finished...I won't lie, it took me a couple of The Closer episodes to finish, but I know my next one will be faster, and I think instead of the "present wrapping" method I'll try to make it a little more tailored, but not to say that I'm not completely happy with how this way turned out, I just want to see how good I can get at it lol...now time to load the DVDs...even tho the DVDs do stick up over the box, the lid fits right on top perfectly edge to edge
Not too bad if I do say so myself, and I didn't have to splurge on the IKEA ones...I hope you like this little DYI as much as I did, would love to hear your comments about mine as well as when you decide to do your own
