BEST GOLD SPRAY PAINT...EVER!

I finally found the absolute best gold spray paint...thanks to Brittany...and I am in Love! If you remember I made over my craigslist bar stools and spray painted them with a gold that I thought I was happy with...until I saw Brittany use her favorite on her new headboard. When I saw the after pic of her headboard I thought the frame was metal, low and behold it was actually wood...a spray paint that produced a beautiful gold that I feel like I have been waiting for forever AND it looked like actually metal, I was sold! So it was time to redo my craigslist bar stools redo. I only had time to take a quick horrible iphone pic this morning, but you will get the idea...

Now I am on the hunt for anything to have the excuse to use this spray paint on.

As for the house...we are getting our high gloss black on! And I LOVE it (2 more doors to do as well as some sanding, touch ups and window scraping)

CRAIGSLIST BAR STOOLS AFTER

As mentioned here I purchased a pair of bar stools from craigslist that need some attention.
Here are the bar stools BEFORE:

And here they are AFTER:

much better!

All I did for the seats was take off the old fabric and reupholster them with this spotted fabric
I basically used this tutorial from Little Green Notebook with tips for the corners. Mine was a little harder because I used two layers of fabric because the spotted was just a little too thin and I could see the yellow foam through, so i first upholstered a layer of white fabric, and then the spotted so they didn't come out as perfect as they could have. I should have gone to the store and picked up some batting instead of using the white fabric but apparently I was too lazy for that.

Someday I would love to be able to afford these:

CRAIGSLIST REDO WITH SPOTTED FABRIC

I don't know why people like spray painting so much. I mean, yes, it produces great results, but I HATE doing it. No matter if its a windy day or not, I always feel like every spray is spraying back at me and I am just poisoning my lungs with spray paint (yes I do wear a mask but it never seems to really help - that shit flies into ever crevice).

But onto the topic at hand. I bought these craigslist barstools for 40.00 for the pair, which was a tad more than I wanted to pay (because they did need work), but the lady didn't seem to understand negotiating down, and she was also selling them for her son who wasn't there, so since I was already there and it was still a good deal, I knew they would most likely work pretty well at the island so I took them (well I paid her for them first and then I took them).

We originally had two white wooden barstools with rush seats, that just didn't work, too country and they stuck out too far from the island when they were pushed in. I also didn't like their high backs. These I can push all the way under the counter with the back not sticking out to far into the rest of the room.

The craiglist chairs where ugly ugly ugly. They had this weird ivory and brown speckled paint job that looked oh so strange (which is not really visible in the before pic). And of course the seats were in obvious need of reupholstering.

BEFORE:

(oh and do you see that amazing velvet tufted brass chair in the background?! another craigslist find I am so excited about and someday will be able to share with you once I reupholster them - yes I have two! and you can see the old beige walls, so glad those are gone!)

So Then onto spray painting...

So much better! I originally used Rustoleum Metalic in Brass, but wasn't really happy with how it came out, so I went back into my pins and found this post from Brittany Makes, and chose Design Masters Brilliant Gold, I am pretty happy with it but may want to try sometime Design Masters Gold Metal. It is REALLY hard (at least for me) to pick a brass/gold spray paint and really like it and stick with it, I can never seem to decide if I like the more yellow gold or more honey gold. I do think I may want to use a clear gloss finish to it though, so it faux shines a little more like this:

via
I also think that chair above is going to be inspiration for my other craigslist chairs, reupholstering them with black velvet.

Back to the barstools again...they aren't totally finished cause I still need to upholster the seat, but I am planning on using this spotted fabric from spoonflower (unfortunately I don't think it is available anymore - someone please let me know if you find it). Once finished I will be sure to share the full AFTER.

CHAOS

This is what the condo looked liked this weekend...

With 12ft ceilings, a ten foot ladder and not a lot of space our small condo became a disaster zone of stuff everywhere, just so I could manage to get that ladder around to paint the whole place. With just a couple small walls that need a second coat, it is almost done. After photos soon to come! Ahhh that white makes me so happy!

GOLD GLITTER MOUSE PAD

What's better than adding a little sparkle to your desk? Even though my desk project isn't finished, well even yet to be started, I've been thinking of ways to dress it up once it is done.
The materials I used are below, although you don't have to use the IKEA trivets, you could use a regular mouse pad that maybe you already have, I just happened to be there over the weekend and thought it would be cute to have a round mouse pad.

1. layer the top of your mouse pad with mod podge
2. after you have sprinkled the glitter over your mouse pad and shaken off the excess, allow the glitter and mod podge to dry a couple hours, then shake off again any excess glitter that didn't dry (not shown), then pour a moderate amount of mod podge over the glitter
3. rotate the mouse pad to spread the mod podge evenly over the mouse pad
4. allow to dry over night

and then you get this....

A sparkly accessory for your desk!

MAGAZINE OVERHAUL

Do you have piles of magazines around your house like I do? Maybe they look like this? (usually a little messier i bet!)

CHERRIESANDCLAY.COM

For me I have tons of issues of Interior Design Magazines from all my subscriptions that I just don't want to throw away because there are some pics or articles in each of them I want to save, but they are taking up way too much space in our small condo. I came across this binder from Naked Binder and thought what a great way to organize them.

I chose the linen, I love the natural look of it and that little finger hole is perfect for once I shelve them and have to pull them down from above.

So all I did was take an Xacto knife and cut out the pages I wanted and inserted them into sheet protectors from staples. I included the cover page just to keep them a little more organized and that way I knew what article was from which issue. I didn't organize my binders by categories like bathrooms, kitchens etc., which would be helpful, but because when there are features of someone's house they shoot more than one room of the house so I wanted to keep all of them together instead of separating them.

You can do this for any magazines you like, obviously they don't have to been design mags. My favorite health and fitness mag is SHAPE, so I collect those too, I cut out all the exercises and put them in one binder, that way if I want to work out at home I have a HUGE array of choices and never have to do the same thing.
I love flipping through the binder! It's like a huge magazine filled with beautiful pics and no ads! Can't beat that!

KITCHEN REDO - MARBLE BACKSPLASH

The kitchen backsplash is almost done! My cousin is coming back today to do the grout. Our kitchen has been an on going process for what seems awhile now, we've done things here and there as we go and now it seems to be really coming together and it's so exciting! See the kitchen redo from the beginning here and here

But below are a few pics from yesterday of some of the tile up, I might be in love lol

AGAIN! I've been M.I.A.
Things have just been pretty hectic the last couple weeks around here. My cousin is over at our house as I speak (well, type) installing the kitchen backsplash! I am so excited! He had some extra time this week so its happening sooner than I thought and I can't wait to go home and see the progress, Ryan is home so the lucky guy gets to see it before me!
But in the meantime I thought I would share a little bit of what my sister has been up to. Like me I am sure you all are OBSESSED with Pinterest and have a million DIY pins you think, as you are pinning, "I'm gonna do that!" but never do? Well I have a ton and have yet to really try any of them. My sister, Sam, her husband, and three kids in tow just moved to Arkansas. They bought a house that needs a little TLC and have been working at it all summer. She told me about this pin she found on Pinterest and wanted to do it in their kitchen....

PINTEREST

So in came Chris, my brother in law, and worked his magic....pretty damn close to the pin huh?! I think it looks great! Now I just need to execute some of my pins I've been wanting to try.

DIY IKEA SCONCE HACK

For a long while I have been looking for lighting for the master bedroom. Always planning on using a sconce on either side of the bed, I purchased two Small Architecture Boom Sconces from Restoration Hardware , BUT they were too big for the room. {Sad Face}. Frustrated that I waited too long to return them, I don't want to spend a lot of money right now on new lights, especially since I am trying to save for a new counter top for the kitchen (shhh don't tell Ryan). So long story short, I was at IKEA and on a whim, cause I usually don't bother to go through the lighting section, I did, and came across these...

(OH AND IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED IN PURCHASING THOSE TWO RESTO SCONCES FROM ME, I'LL SELL THEM AT 280.00 FOR THE PAIR, JUST SHOOT ME AN EMAIL)

It's only 15 bucks and even though I don't like the shade its shown with - its just too small (but the shade sells separate anyway) and the finish wasn't what I was looking for, I thought for $15 each it would be worth trying to spray paint them and buying new shades.

HERE ARE MY STEPS:

1.) COVER THE CORD WITH SARAN WRAP (PLASTIC WRAP)
2.) COVER THE LIGHT SOCKET WITH PAINTERS TAPE
3.) SPRAY WITH PRIMER
4.) SPRAY SEVERAL COATS OF DESIRED COLOR (IN MY CASE BRASS/GOLD)

I ended up making another trip to IKEA to check out the lamp shade options, as I did not like the one shown on display with the sconce. I wanted something larger and more of a drum shape. This is what I found...

The JARA lampshade. The best part about it is you can change the position of how it sits on a lamp - see below (sorry for the blurry pics).

BEFORE

AFTER
I chose to flip the fitting in the shade the other direction so I could place it on the sconce like this...

I decided to hang mine upside down from how they are intended. I like the look better this way and wanted down lighting as opposed to up lighting because they are next to our bed and needed for night reading. I also plan to do something with the cord, as I don't like that its black, so either replace it with a white cord (the sconces are easily removable b/c they just slide into a bracket that's attached to the wall) or get a white wall cord cover. Eventually, maybe I'll even take on the task this weekend, the walls will be painted white, and I will attempt soon to make a tufted headboard.

What do you think? I'm satisfied for now, I think it turned out to be a good solution until I want to spend the $$ on lighting I really want. If the gold isn't for you, I bet Oil Rubbed Bronze would be great too!
